Downlands is on the border between Oxfordshire and Berkshire just off the A417, close to Cholsey village and is easily accessible from Wallingford, Blewbury, Didcot, Goring, Streatley, Abingdon, Henley and Reading. Customers are welcome between the hours of 9.00am and 12.30pm 7 days a week.

Downlands has excellent facilities for both dogs and cats. Staff are on-site day and night, to ensure the health and safety of the animals in our care. Special diets and medications can be administered to both dogs and cats if necessary. We are inspected and licensed every year by the local authority.

THE KENNELS

The kennels are all contained inside an insulated building (helping keep the dogs cool in the summer and warm in the winter). We provide plastic beds and bedding, but your dog can bring their own bedding and toys. We have large grassy exercise areas as well as gravel runs, where the dogs are exercised three times a day. If you have more than one dog they can stay together in one of our larger family kennels. The dogs from different families are not mixed in the kennels nor in the exercise areas.

THE CATTERY

Each cat has their own individually heated sleeping quarters with access to their own covered run. The cattery is protected from wind and rain

If you have two cats they can share if required. We provide cat bedding, but your cat can bring his/her own bedding and toys. Scratch poles are also welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions….

Q. Do you mix the dogs from different families?

A. No, the dogs have their own indoor kennel (with their bed, water bowl and food) within an insulated building and are not mixed when exercised in the grass and gravel runs.

Q. Can my pet bring their own bed/toys ?

A. Yes, we think it is a good idea to bring in something that smells of home. If your dog is in to any toys or treats (pig’s ears, rawhide bones, bonios etc) then by all means bring them in. We provide plastic beds, fleeces and bowls.

Q. What sort of exercise do the dogs get ?

A. The dogs get taken out to our grass and gravel runs three times a day. We like to have a fairly strict routine to the day as this keeps the dogs calmer. New dogs very soon get into the routine and our regulars just settle straight back in.

Q. How much contact with people do the dogs get ?

A. The dogs are taken out to our runs and back in three times a day on the lead by our staff. We don’t have a large number of staff so the dogs quickly get to know us all (and us them). Whenever we are moving around doing jobs in the kennels and cattery we talk to the animals.

Q. What and when do you feed ?

A. The dogs are fed first thing in the morning. Our standard offering is either Chudleys Classic (a complete dried food – which we soak with warm water) or tinned and mixer. The cats tend to be fed mid-morning and we offer either Hills Science Plan Dried or Felix in jelly (or both). If your pet needs to be fed twice or is on a special diet then you can bring this in and we will feed this instead. There is however no reduction in price for this as it requires extra effort at feed times.

Q. What about giving medications or if my pet becomes ill ?

A. We can give most medications as required – we just need details of what and when. If your pet becomes ill we normally contact your own vet first (to check if there is any relevant medical history) and will then, if necessary, take them to Larkmead Vets in Cholsey village (or call them out to us). We will, if appropriate, call you or your emergency contact for agreement to treatment etc.

Q. What Vaccinations do you require ?

A. Before we can accept a dog or cat for boarding, we need to see evidence of up-to-date inoculations. All pets must have been inoculated as follows:

Dogs: Inoculations against Parvovirus, Distemper, Hepatitis and the Leptospiral diseases. (Annual Booster). Inoculation against kennel cough is optional.

Cats: Inoculations against Feline Enteritis and Cat Flu (Annual Booster).

Q. Are the cats kept near the dogs ?

A. No, they are on the opposite side of our site.

Q. What facilities do the cats have ?

A. The 14 individual cattery units are enclosed in a cattery building. Each unit has a chalet at the back, which has a thermostatically controlled heat pad in it. Access to this is by ramp and cat flap or by jumping through the door (when open). The rest of each unit consists of an enclosed paved area with litter tray, food and water.

Q. Can we come and have a look ?

A. Of Course. We try to do viewings between 10 and 12, to allow us more time to spend with you. Just give us a call to let us know when you are coming.

Q. Do you provide clipping/grooming services ?

A. No. We offer dog baths, which cost £10, but nothing more elaborate than that.
